How to rate movies automatically while you watch a movie

What if a friend of yours has a hard disk that contains about 500 movies -- of course you get the approval ratings of the movies to see which ones you should watch first!
You can't possibly search the approval rating for each one on IMBD manually so how do you do that -- of course by writing a Python script that uses IMDB to get the ratings and prints out a sorted list of movies!
This is what I did -- hacked together a simple program and now I can enjoy the movies while watching one! You can also do some exploratory data analysis to see how good the entire collection is!
Getting Movie Ratings
Here is the program -- it uses a list of movie names in a file as input and simply saves the movies and their ratings in two variables in addition to printing them. We can then use these variables to sort and display some characteristics of the collection.

Getting the list

I used the following code to get the names of the movies from the directory. This script cleans the names of the movies so that we can search them using IMDB.

احمررخ

کئ صدیوں پہلے کا ذکر ہے  کہ موجودہ ملک افغانستان کے شمال میں ایک عظیم سلطنت واقع تھی. اس سلطنت میں ایک بہت بڑا جنگل تھا جس میں انواع و اقسام کے درخت اور جانور پاۓ جاتے تھے. ایک دن ایک شخص اس جنگل میں مہم جوئی کیلئے نکلا.  جب کئی دن گزر گئے اور وہ واپس نہ آیا تو اس کے گھر والوں کو اس کی فکر ہوئی . اس شخص کے بھائی اور ہمساۓ اس کا کھوج لگانے جنگل میں اس کے پیچھے گۓ لیکن وہ بھی واپس نہ آۓ. اس گمشدہ شخص کی بیوی اور دیگر اہل و عیال ان حیرت انگیز گمشدگیوں کی خبر لے کر بادشاہ وقت کے دربار میں حاضر ہوئے اور التجا کی کہ ان افراد کی بازیابی کیلئے مناسب اقدامات کئے جایئں . بادشاہ، بہت ہی رحمدل اور بہادر تھا. اس نے اسی وقت اپنے سپاہ سالار کو حکم دیا کے ایک فوجی دستہ جنگل میں ان گمشدہ افراد کا پتا لگانے کیلئے روانہ کیا جاۓ . وہ دن اور آج کا دن' اس دستے میں شامل کسی فوجی کو دوبارہ نہیں دیکھا گیا. ان فوجیوں کی گمشدگی سے پوری سلطنت میں جنگل کے بارے میں خوف و ہراس جنگل کی آگ کی طرح پھیل گیا اور جنگل کے بارے میں طرح طرح کی خوفناک کہانیوں نے لوگوں کے ذہنوں میں گھر کر لیا. کچھ کہتے کہ جنگل میں خوفناک آدمخور پاۓ جاتے ہیں تو کچھ کے مطابق یہ گمشدگیاں جنگل میں موجود  بدروحوں کی کارستانی ہیں. جو کچھ زیادہ عقل و شعور رکھتے تھے انہوں نے اس سب کی  محض جنگلی جانوروں یا کسی قدرتی حادثے سے وضاحت کرنے کی کوشش کی. کچھ شرارتی لوگوں نے یہاں تک مشہور کر دیا کے اصل میں جنگل میں خوبصورت پریوں نے بسیرا کر لیا ہے اور یہ تمام افراد ان کی اداؤں کی تاب نہ لاتے ہوئے وہیں کے ہو رہے ہیں - خیر' ان تمام تر کہانیوں کا اثر یہ ہوا کے بہت جلد ہر کسی نے جنگل میں جانا چھوڑھ دیا. بادشاہ نے بھی عوام کی حفاظت کی خاطر ایسے قوانین وضح کیے کہ جن کے مطابق کسی کو بھی جنگل کے قریب جانے ' وہاں گھر بنانے' لکڑیاں کاٹنے وغیرہ کی اجازت نہ تھی.  بادشاہ اور اس کے وزیروں نے جنگل سے متصل حصے میں ایک دفاعی دیوار بھی تعمیر کرا دی تا کہ امن عامہ میں فساد نہ برپا ہو. وقت گزرتا گیا اور لوگوں کے ذہنوں میں جنگل کے بارے میں خوف بڑھتا گیا. اب لوگ جنگل کا ذکر آنے پر بھی آیت الکرسی  اور استغفار کا ورد شروع کر دیتے. ڈر کا یہ عالم تھا کہ لوگوں نے جنگل کا نام تک لینا تک چھوڑھ دیا اور اس سلطنت کے پاۓ کے زباندانوں  نے جنگل کیلئے نئے الفاظ مرتب کرنا شروع کر دئے جیسے دارالموت' دروازہ وحشت ' عذاب سنگیں' مسکن مجنوں ' مقام عبرت ' وغیرہ وغیرہ .

ایک دن اس سلطنت کے دارلحکومت میں ایک  نوجوان نے قدم رکھا. اس شخص کے بال انتہا کے چمکنے والے سنہری تھے. لوگ اس کے بالوں کی خوبصورتی سے متاثر ہو کر اس کے گرد اکٹھے ہو گۓ. کچھ لوگوں نے تو یہ سمجھ کر کہ اس کے بال بال نہیں بلکہ سونے کے تار ہیں ' ان کو نوچنے کی بھی کوشش کی. اس شخص کے بالوں کی خوبصورتی کی خبر ملکہ وقت تک پہنچی تو اس نے اسے شاہی دربار میں بلا بھیجا. جب وہ شخص دربار میں حاضر ہوا تو  بادشاہ 'ملکہ اور تمام درباری نہ صرف اس کے بالوں سے متاثر ہوئے بلکہ اس کے چال چلن'آزاد رویے'  خود اعتمادی سے بھرپور طرز گفتار'  آنکھوں کی بیباکی اوررعب نے بھی ان کے دلوں میں گھر کر لیا. ملکہ کے دل میں تو فوراً اپنی شہزادی  کے مستقبل کے خواب تابناک ہوتے محسوس ہوئے. بادشاہ سلامت کو بھی اپنی مملکت کیلئے ایک عظیم وزیراعظم دکھ رہا تھا کہ اچانک اس شخص نے بادشاہ کو مخاطب کر کے یہ سوال کیا "شہنشاہ عالی مرتبت' میں آپ کے احساسات کی قدر کرتا ہوں ؛ لیکن اس سے پہلے کے آپ میری بابت کوئی فیصلہ سنا دیں ' مجھے اپنے آپ کو ثابت کرنے کا موقع دیں!". بادشاہ اس دلچسپ شخص کے اس اسرار پر دمبخود رہ گیا اور بولا "بتاؤ! کس طرح کا موقع چاہتے ہو !". اس پر اس شخص نے بادشاہ سے عرض کی "آپ کی عظیم سلطنت میں کوئی ایسا کام جس کو آپ نہ ممکن سمجھتے ہوں' میں وہ کرنا چاہوں گا!". پورا دربار اس شخص کے اس بیان پر عش عش کر اٹھا. موجودہ سپاہ سالار 'جس کو اپنے فوجیوں کی گمشدگی کا دکھ بھی تھا اور اس نو آمد شخص کی شاہی عزت افزائی سے حسد بھی' اپنی نشست سے اٹھا اور بادشاہ کے کان میں جا کر کچھ کہا. بادشاہ سلامت نے تائید میں سر ہلایا اور یوں گویا ہوئے "کیا تم  نے واقعی ناممکن کو ممکن کر دکھانے کی ٹھان لی ہے ؟" اس پر اس شخص نے اپنا خنجر نکالا اور اپنے ہاتھ پر اس طرح پھیرا کے اس میں سے خون نکل آیا . بادشاہ نے جب ہمت کی یہ شدت دیکھی تو اسے جنگل کے بارے میں بتایا اور ساتھ ہی وہاں کے خطرات سے بھی خبردار کیا. دربار میں موجود لوگ آنکھیں بند کر اونچا اونچا معوذتین کا ورد شروع ہو گۓ.  یہ سب سن کر وہ شخص صرف مسکرایا اور بولا "یہی تو میں چاہتا تھا! اور اب آپ سے صرف اجازت چاہوں گا!".  سپاہ سالار نے اپنے کچھ فوجی اس کے ساتھ  روانہ کرنے کی پیشکش کی لیکن اس شخص نے اس کے پیچھے موجود سازش کو بھانپتے ہوئے اس پیشکش کو ایک پرتپاک شکرئیے کے ساتھ واپس کر دیا.  اسی شام وہ شخص اپنی تلوار در میان کئے اپنے کتے کے ھمراہ جنگل کی سمت روانہ ہو گیا. 

دن ہفتوں اور ہفتے مہینوں میں بدلتے چلے گۓ لیکن اس نوجوان کی واپسی کی کوئی صورت نہ  ھونے  پائی. لوگ بھی رفتہ رفتہ اس نوجوان کا ذکر اس کے سنہری بالوں کی بجاے اس کی بیوقوفی کی وجہ سے ہی کرتے نظرآۓ-  لوگوں میں طرح طرح کی چہ مہ گوئیاں شروع ہو گیئں. سپاہ سالار اور وزیراعظم نے تو یہاں تک کہ دیا کہ "دیکھئے جی! جب ہمارے بہادر سورما یہ نہ کر پاۓ تو یہ کل کا چھوکرا یہ کیسے کر سکتا ہے' مر مرا گیا ہو گا کہیں!". اہل دانش بھی ان عورتوں کی طرح شروع ہو گئے جو کسی کا رشتہ ٹوٹنے پر جھوٹا اظھار افسوس کچھ ایسے کرتی ہیں کہ "دیکھا بہن! ہمارا تو پہلے ہی خیال یہ تھا کہ یہ رشتہ آپ کے معیار کا نہیں' بس آپ کی دلجوئی کیلئے آپ کو کبھی نہ بتایا!". 

دوسری طرف وہ نوجوان گھنے جنگل میں اپنی تلوار سے راستہ بناتے بناتے آخر کار ایک تالاب کے قریب پہنچا. سخت پیاس کے مارے اس کا کتا اس سے آگے بھاگ کر تالاب کے کنارے جا پہنچا. جوں ہی کتے نے اپنا منہ تالاب کے قریب کیا' تالاب میں سے ایک بڑا سا ہاتھ نکلا اور کتے کو پکڑ کر دوبارہ سطح آب سے نیچے غائب ہو گیا. نوجوان نے یہ سارا منظر دیکھا اور گھبرانے کی بجاۓ خود کلامی کے انداز میں کہنے لگا "اچھا! تو یہ ہے وہ جگہ!". اس کے پاس اپنے پانی پینے والے مٹی کے پیالے کے علاوہ تو کچھ تھا نہیں سو وہ اسی سے اس تالاب کو خالی کرنا شروع ہو گیا. 

کئی دفعہ اسے یہ لگتا کے جیسے تالاب میں کوئی ہے. لیکن اس پر کسی چیز نے حملہ نہ کیا. سو وہ اپنے اسی پیالے سے تالاب کو خالی کرتا رہا. اس میں کئی مہینے صرف ہو گۓ. آخر کار ' وہ اس تالاب کی تہ تک پہنچ گیا اور وہاں اس کو کیچڑ سے اٹا ایک آدمی نظر آیا جس کا پورا جسم سرخ سنہری بالوں سے ڈھکا ہوا تھا. اس نے اس آدمی کو پہلے تو رسیوں سے جکڑا اور پھر تالاب سے بھر نکال کر نہلایا. اس کے بعد وہ اسے اپنی تلوار کی نوک سے ہانکتا واپس سلطنت کے دارلحکومت کی جانب روانہ ہوا. اس نے اس آدمی کو "احمررخ" کا نام دیا. اس نوجوان کی واپس آمد پر پورا شہر اس کو اور اس جنگلی بلا کو دیکھنے امڈ آیا جس نے ان سب کو پوری زندگی خوف میں مبتلا رکھا تھا. نوجوان کی واپسی پر اس کے ناقدین بغلیں جھانکنے لگے. اہل دانش اپنی بات سے یوں پھرے جیسے وہ پہلے پھرے تھے اور وزیراعظم اور سپاہ سالار کسی کو دکھائی نہ دئے. احمربدن کو ایک پنجرے میں بند کر کے شاہی محل لایا گیا. شہزادی کو بہترین لباس زیب تن کرنے کا حکم دے کر ملکہ اور بادشاہ سلامت خود اس نوجوان کے استقبال کیلئے محل کے دروازے تک آۓ. لیکن وہ پراسرار نوجوان کہیں راستے میں  چپکے سے غائب ہو گیا اور کبھی نے دوبارہ اس کی شکل نہ دیکھی. خیر احمررخ کو بادشاہ کے محل کے صحن میں رکھا گیا اور لوگ اسے دیکھنے آتے' اس کو برا بھلا کہتے اور اس پرسرار نوجوان کے بہادری کے قصے ایک دوجے کو سناتے نہ تھکتے. کچھ لوگوں نے تو اپنے بچوں کے نام بھی اس پرسرار نوجوان کی صفات پر رکھنا شروع کر دیے جیسے أشقر' درخشندہ' زریں' ہفت بہادر' خوف شکن وغیرہ. 

بادشاہ سلامت کا ایک چھوٹا بیٹا بھی تھا جس کے ابھی کھیلنے کودنے کے دن تھے. وہ اپنے والدین کا سب سے فرمانبردار اور ہونہار سپوت تھا. صبح سویرے مدرسے جاتا اور خوب علم حاصل کرتا اور پھر شام میں اپنی سنہری گیند کے ساتھ محل کے سبزہ زار میں کھیلتا رہتا. محل کا سبزہ زار احمررخ کے قیدخانے کے قریب تھا. ملکہ نے اپنے بیٹے کو احمررخ کے پنجرے سے دور رہنے کی سختی سے تاکید کی ہوئی تھی . اک دو دفعہ احمررخ بے اسے بلایا لیکن چھوٹے شہزادے نے اپنی تربیت اور ماں کی تاکید کو نہ بھلایا. ایک دن کھیلتے کھلتے شہزادے کی گیند پنجرے کی سلاخوں سے ہوتی ہی اندر چلی گئی. شہزادے کا اوپر کا سانس اوپر اور نیچے کا نیچے رہ گیا. کیونکہ اس کو وہ گیند بہت عزیز تھی سو اس نے ایک گہرا سانس لیا' اپنی ہمت خود بڑھائی اور احمررخ کے قریب پہنچا "احمررخ! براہ کرم میری گیند واپس کر دیجئے" اس نے لجاجت سے بھرپور لہجے میں احمررخ سے گزارش کی. یہ لہجہ اس نے اپنے مدرسہ میں اپنے اساتذہ اور اپنے باپ کے دربار میں نوکر شاہی سے سیکھا تھا اور اسے امید تھی کے اسے اس کی گیند واپس مل جاۓ گی. لیکن احمررخ کا ایسا کوئی ارادہ نہ تھا "گیںد تو تمھیں تب ہی واپس ملےگی اگر تم مجھے آزاد کرو گے اور خبردار جو کسی کو کچھ بتایا ورنہ میں یہ گیند توڑ دوں گا!". شہزادہ یہ تو جانتا تھا کہ اسے ایسا نہیں کرنا چاہئے. پتا نہیں احمررخ باہر نکل کر کیا کرے. شہزادے کو زیادہ ڈر  اپنی والدہ' بادشاہ' اساتذہ اور بہن بھائیوں کو ناراض کرنے کا تھا  جنہوں نے اسے احمررخ سے دور رہنے کا کہا تھا. لیکن  اسے اپنی گیند کے ٹوٹنے کا ڈر اس سے بھی زیادہ تھا. "لیکن مجھے کیا پتا کے تمھیں کیسے آزاد کرنا ہے!  دروازے پر تو اتنا بڑا تالا لگا ہے اور میرے پاس تو اسکی چابی بھی نہیں!" شہزادے نے احمررخ کو بتایا. احمررخ مسکرایا اور بولا "چابی تو تمھیں اپنی ملکہ کے سرہانے کے نیچے سے مل جاۓ گی سو جلدی کرو!".شام ہونے پر شہزادہ ڈرتے ڈرتے ملکہ کی خوابگاہ میں پہنچا اور وہاں اسے چابی مل گئی. چابی چرانے کے بعد اس نے احمررخ کے پنجرے کا دروازہ کھول دیا. احمررخ نے شہزادے کو اس کی سنہری گیند واپس کی اور خود اندھیرے میں جنگل کی راہ لی. 

شہزادے کو اب اپنی غلطی کا احساس ہوا اور وہ زار و قطار رونے لگا. اس پر یہ حقیقت افشاں ھوئی کہ اس نے تو ایک نہ قابل معافی جرم کا ارتکاب کر دیا ہے جس کی پاداش میں اس کے ماں باپ اس کو کبھی  پہلے کی طرح نہیں چاہیں گے اور اس صورت حال میں اس کا محل میں رہنا بےسود ہو گا اور وہ سنہری گیند بھی اس کیلئے بے معانی تھی کیوںکہ وہ محل کے سبزہ زار میں تو مزید کھیل ہی نہیں سکتا تھا. اس نے پیچھے سے احمررخ کو آواز دی "احمررخ! احمررخ! میری مدد کرو!!". احمررخ واپس شہزادے کے پاس آیا اور اسے اپنے کندھوں پر سوار کر کے دوبارہ جنگل کی طرف چل پڑا. شہزادہ اپنی زندگی اور تمام تر آسائشیں چھن جانے کے خوف سے ابھی بھی زار و قطار رو رہا تھا. "شہزادے! پریشان نہ ہو! میں تمھیں ایسی ایسی چیزیں دکھاؤں گا جو تم نے آج تک نہ دیکھی اور نہ سنی ہونگی! لیکن اب اس کے بعد تم واپس اپنے گھر کبھی نہ جا سکو گے!". 

وہ چھپتے چھپاتے جنگل میں ایک دریا کے قریب پہنچے جس کا پانی بالکل صاف شفاف تھا' اتنا نرم سیر کے اقبال نے اس کے بارے میں کہا تھا "تھی نظر حیراں کہ یہ دریا ہے یا تصویر آب!". احمررخ نے گھاس پھونش جمح کر کے ایک چھوٹی سی جھونپڑی اور ایک بستر بنایا بلکل دریا کنارے اور کچھ لکڑیاں اکھٹی کر کے آگ جلائی تا کہ اس کی روشنی سے  جنگلی جانور قریب نہ آئیں. "مجھے ایک اھم کام سے جانا ہے! شہزادے تم اس دریا کی حفاظت کرنا! دیکھنا اس میں کچھ گرنے نہ پاۓ!" احمررخ یہ کر چلتا بنا. شہزادہ آرام سے بسٹر میں سو گیا. جب صبح ہوئی تو ابھی تک نہ احمررخ کا نام تھا نہ نشان! شہزادہ دل بہلانے کیلئے دریا کنارے آیا. اسے پانی میں سنہری مچھلیاں اور دیگر ضیاءی مخلوق نظر آئ. اچانک اسے احساس ہوا کے اس کی انگلی میں شدید درد ہے شائد احمررخ کے پنجرے کا دروازہ کھولتے ہوئے اسے کچھ لگ گیا تھا. کچھ سکون کی خاطر اس نے سب کچھ بھول کر اپنی انگلی دریا کے پانی میں ڈبو دی. انگلی جونہی پانی سے جڑی' اس کی تمام تکلیف دور ہو گئی. لیکن جب شہزادے نے اپنی انگلی واپس نکالی تو  وہ سونے کی طرح چمک رہی رہی . اسے تب احمررخ کی کی گئی تاکید یاد ای اور اس نے رگڑ رگڑ کر سنہری رنگ اتارنے کی کوشش کی لیکن بے سود! رات گئے احمررخ  واپس آیا "شہزادے! کیسا گیا آپ کا دن؟". شہزادے نے اپنی انگلی چھپانے کی کوشش کی لیکن اس سے نکلنے والی سنہری شعاؤں نے احمررخ کو تمام حقیقت بتا دی. "کوئی بات نہیں! اس دفعہ میں تمھیں معاف کرتا ہوں! لیکن آیندہ ایسا نہیں ہونا چاھئیے! سمجھے!". یہ کہ کر احمررخ سو گیا اور شہزادے نے بھی شکر کیا کے جان خلاصی ہوئی. اگلی صبح جب شہزادہ اٹھا تو احمررخ دوبارہ جا چکا تھا. شہزادہ شدید بوریت کا شکار ہوا اور اس نے دوبارہ دریا کا رخ کیا اپنا جی بہلانے کیلئے. اس دفعہ اس نے تہیہہ کیا کہ وہ پانی کے اندر کچھ نہیں گرنے دے گا.  وہ بس جھک کر پانی میں تیرتی مچھلیوں کو دیکھ رہا تھا کے اچانک اس کی ٹوپی سر سے پھسل کر شڑاپ دریا میں جا گری اور گرتے ہی سنہری ہو گئی. اس نے اپنی تیرتی ٹوپی کو نکالا اور جھونپڑی کے پیچھے چھپا دیا. رات کو احمررخ جب واپس آیا تو اس کو ساری روئیداد بن بتاۓ پتا لگ گئی. "دیکھو! میں تمھیں پھر معاف کرتا ہوں! لیکن دوبارہ ایسا نہیں ہونا چاہیے!". وہ یہ کہ کر پھر سو گیا. پوری رات شہزادے کو خواب میں وہ خوبصورت سنہری مچھلیاں نظر آتی رہیں اور صبح ہوتے ہی اس نے اپنے ارد گرد احمررخ کو نہ پا کر پھر دریا کا رخ کیا. دریا کے پانی کی خوبصورتی نے شہزادے کے دل کو پھر گرمایا اور وہ جھک کر دریا اندر دیکھنے لگا. اس نے پہلی دفعہ دریا کے پانی میں اپنا عکس دیکھا. وہ دریا کے پانی اوپر اور جھکا تو اس کے بالوں کی ایک لٹ دریا کے پائی کو چھو گئی اور چھوتے ہی اس کے تمام بال سنہری ہو گۓ . احمررخ کی واپسی سے پہلے شہزادے نے اپنے بالوں کو چھپانے کی کوشش کی لیکن احمر رخ کو پتا چل گیا. وہ مسکرایا اور بولا: "اب تم یہاں میرے ساتھ نہیں رہ سکتے! تم نے اپنے آپ کو اس پانی میں دیکھ لیا ہے! جاؤ! جو تمھیں نظر آیا ہے اس کی تعبیر حاصل کرو!". 

احمررخ نے چھوٹے شہزادے کو تن تنہا ایک سنسان راستے پر روانہ کر دیا. شہزادہ اپنی تمام دولت' خاندان' حسب نسب' اور دوستوں کو کھو چکا تھا. اس کے پاس کچھ بھی نہ تھا. نہ روپا نہ پیسا اور نہ ہی کوئی ہنر. لیکن احمررخ نے اسے وہ چیز دی تھی جس کے بعد اسے کسی اور چیز کی کبھی ضرورت ہی نہ تھی: چمکتے ہوئے سنہری بال!

They become tattooed on your skin
And this embarrasses you in front of strangers
But it gives you
Sweet memories of the times she was closer to you than your own breath....
Don't be angry at these moments of pure, unadulterated pain
This wasn't a test
Or punishment for failing in one!
It's just the way she is!
Don't make yourself suffer!

Remember! during all that time
She was holding you

And not letting you fall off the bed!

A Pakistani commentary on the story of "Iron John"

I came across the story of Iron John in Robert Bly's famous book "Iron John". I intend to do a commentary on the story from a Pakistani perspective. But first -- enjoy my (slight) re-writeup of the story below. I will post my thoughts on what the story is actually about soon.

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom. It was surrounded on one side by a vast forest. One day, a man set off to explore the forest, and he didn’t come back. His brothers and neighbors went to look for him, and they didn’t come back.  The matter of these disappearances was brought before the king. The king sent a platoon of his troops to find out what was going on. But they didn’t return either. Pretty soon, no one went into that forest anymore. All kinds of stories and legends began to fill people’s imaginations about the forest – of vile and vicious creatures, unending perils, hypnotizing spirits, even of mysterious and seductive women whose charms ensnare unsuspecting men who can’t resist their temptations. 

Many years passed like this until a young man with golden hair arrived in the kingdom from elsewhere. His hair was so beautiful that a lot of people came out to see him and took him to meet their king. As young men are, he too had a sense of immortality and an air of fearlessness about him.  He met the king and said, “Is there anything here that one shouldn’t really do?”  The king said, “Well there is this part of the forest which no one goes to any longer because the return rate is very low!”. “Exactly, what I wanted!”, says the young man and sets out towards the forest the very next today taking only his dog along. After many hours of walking through the thick jungle and making a clearing with a machete, they come to a pond. His dog runs to the pond to get a drink. As soon as the dog reaches the edge of the pond, a hand comes out of the water, grabs the dog and pulls him under.

However, instead of panicking and pissing himself, the young man says: “This must be the place.”

He returns to the kingdom and calls in his buddies to accompany him to the forest. They have buckets.  Working diligently, they empty out the pond, one bucket at a time, and that takes a long, long time.  At the bottom of the pond, they find a strange man, covered with hair from head to toe.  They call him Iron John. These young men, take Iron John in chains and put him in a cage in the King’s courtyard. People from all over the kingdom come to the king’s castle to look at Iron John. They rebuke Iron John and praise the brave men who led to his capture.

The king has a son who loves to play in the courtyard with his golden ball. The king and the queen tell the prince to stay away from the wild creature’s cage. Iron John calls the young boy to come over many times but, being a good son, he stays away from the cage.  One evening, the prince’s golden ball rolls into Iron John’s cage through its metal bars. The boy gulps, walks over to the cage and says: “Mr. Iron John, please give me my ball back.”

Iron John says, “Not unless you open my cage and let me out!”

The boy knows he should never do that.  It’s very frightening to let Iron John out into his life and out into the world.  But he really wants the golden ball.  So he says, “But I don’t know how to let you out.”

Iron John says, “The key to the cage is under your mother’s pillow.”

So, the boy waits until the king and queen are gone.  Then he sneaks into his parents’ room, and there under his mother’s pillow is the key.  He steals the key and opens the door of the cage.  Iron John hands him the golden ball and starts heading out to the forest.

The boy looks around and realizes he’s committed an unforgivable sin.  He’s done something for which his parents will never forgive him.  He knows they’ll never see him the way they used to, and knows he can’t stay in the castle anymore.  The ball is useless to him as he cannot play with it in the courtyard any longer.

He cries out to Iron John: “Help me!”

Iron John picks him up and sets him on his shoulders and heads into the forest. The young prince is crying at losing the world he knows behind him. He has tears rolling down his cheeks. Iron John says, “Don’t worry! I have riches which are more than you’ll ever need, but you can never go home again.”

So, Iron John takes the boy to another pond in the forest.  The pond is filled with pristine, crystal-clear water.  Iron John makes a bed of moss and says to the boy, “I have to go away for the day.  Your job is to guard the pond and not let anything fall into the pond.”

Iron John leaves the prince sitting there.  The boy looks in the water and he sees golden fish and golden snakes. As he sits there, he gets weary. He realizes that his finger got pinched in the cage when he opened the door to let Iron John out, and it hurts. And he forgets himself. He puts his finger into the pond for some relief, and when he pulls it out, his finger has been turned to gold. He tries to rub it off but to no effect. He’s scared and worried about what’ll happen if Iron John discovers that he has broken his rule.

Iron John comes back that evening and says, “How did you do?”  And the boy hides his finger behind his back and says, “Fine.” But Iron John knows what has happened. He says, “I forgive you. Just don’t let it happen again.”

The next day, Iron John gives the same instructions and leaves for the day. And the boy gets bored. He’s looking in the water and leans out over the water, and his hat falls off.  He tries to catch it, but it falls into the water.  It, too, turns to gold.

Again, he tries to hide it from Iron John. But Iron John knows what’s happened, and says, “Again, I forgive you, but don’t let it happen again.”

The third day Iron John leaves and gives the same instructions to the boy. Again, the boy is bored with this useless task.  He leans over, and he sees his reflection for the first time.  He’s so taken with his appearance, he leans further over the pond, and a lock of his hair falls over his face and into the water.  His hair turns radiant gold.

When he hears Iron John coming, he covers it up with a handkerchief. But it’s hopeless. Iron John knows what has happened. Iron John tells the boy, “You can’t stay with me any longer. But if you need me, come to the edge of the forest and call my name and I’ll come to your help.

He sets the boy off on a journey down a lonely road, all by himself. He has lost his fortune, his family, his reputation, and friends.  He has lost everything. The former prince has no money. He has no talent. But Iron John gave him the only thing he will ever need: Beautiful Golden Hair.

A true story on Mothers' Day

My grandmother was a hardworking lady with a strong soul. She also had her own peculiar ways of doing things. One thing she kept on doing till the end of her days was to give a small amount of money to charity whenever one of her children and, later, grandchildren passed an exam. She, herself, was not literate and could not read or write. I think she could count though. I say this because she always gave Rupees 1.25 to charity after every successful examination by her progeny.
One day I asked her as to why she gave such a small amount when she could give more. She told me that back in the 1950s or so, she had promised our peer sahab (spiritual leader) to give this exact amount to charity for this purpose. It was her way of thanking Allah and, according to her, she never missed a payment and God also kept His end of the bargain by blessing her children with success. It used to be a significant amount of money at that time but it devalued over the decades. She simply kept on giving this exact amount as she never felt any need to change it. However, in the early 2000s it became harder and harder to find fractional change so she would give Rs. 2 instead of her usual Rs. 1.25 to the donation box installed at the tomb of our peer sahab.
Whenever she would hear that I had passed an exam, she would come to our home, confirm that I had passed by asking "putra, pass ho gya ayen?" ("Son, did you pass?"), congratulate me and give me some sweets and the Rs. 2 and tell me to go and put it in the donation box as she couldn't walk much at the time. It was like a ritual.
I was in my undergraduate in computer science at the time and I scored two gold medals in the final exam. I came home and showed them to her. She took both of them, raised her hands in prayer and said: "Allah shuker hai tera, eh tere tamghe!" (God! Thank you, these medals are yours!). She then asked me what were these for and I told her that I had completed my degree so they were awarded to me. She got a little puzzled and asked "putra, pass hoya ayen?" (Son, did you pass?) and I, instead of giving her a yes or no answer, told her that I had scored a CGPA of this much out of this much. I guess she never understood the concept of GPA and got even more confused. She even had a frightened look on her face. She asked me: "putra ee chorh, meinoo ee dass ke pass hoya ain ya fail?". (Son, leave these numbers aside, just tell me if you have passed or failed!"). I told her that I had passed and then she raised both her hands into the air and thanked God for it. Then she took out Rs. 2 from her scarf and gave them to me to go and put in the donation box.
She passed away a year after that. I still have those Rs. 2 with me and they are more precious than those two gold medals.

May Allah have mercy on her soul and bless her with paradise.

Not Here

I often wonder, why don't I follow some seemingly cool ideas I have -- I feel that the soul tells me to do things but I lack the courage to follow them. Tonight, I came across this great Rumi poem on this subject -- I guess I am half-hearted holding back, well-enough getting by! (Title: Not Here) There's courage involved if you want to become truth There is a broken-open place in a lover Where are those qualities of bravery and sharp compassion? What's the use of old and frozen thought? I want a howling hurt This is not a treasury where gold is stored; this is for copper. We alchemists look for talent that can heat up and change. Lukewarm won't do. Halfhearted holding back, well-enough getting by? Not here. (Rumi)

زحال مسکیں مکن تغافل دُرائے نیناں بنائے پتیاں
